Or, charge a lot less for your hardware (match it with the quality it provides which is a c+ to a B-, on a good day). Mevo, please, do not charge for this additional features like graphic overlays and multi-destination streaming. the 'real' price of the product over it's assumed fairly short 3 year life- (if it's longer than 3 years, the overall price of the camera is even more), you've now overpriced the product significantly. There is a very real place for a low cost medium quality virtual multicam system like the Mevo.īut, once you break that $1000 price (i.e. I can also buy pro level camera's with wireless units for the Sling Studio and have the same ease of use with true pro features more money, yes, but only, maybe twice the cost of the mevo, and I get far more than 3 years of service out of pro level cameras, so it's really cheaper than the mevo).

This system costs less than the mevo, but is a true pro level system that you can grow as needed for professional live streaming.
#Switcher studio pro competitors plus
Plus I can add iphones and pro cameras with additional equipment if I want. Pro level graphics with substantially more flexibility than the mevo software.

The software is substantially more advanced than the Mevo setup as well. The quality is at least as good as the mevo camera. I can buy 3 ZTE 12mp capable cameras for $50 each. Sling Studio at cost of $999 for the hardware and you can use ANY phone (iOS or android) up to 9 devices. Better graphics and pro level features as well (much better, by my tests). I can buy three of those and pay for the switcher studio and get a three camera setup with MUCH better video capabilities. An iphone SE is $150 from prepaid wireless carriers here in the US (new). Switcher Studio at a cost of $300 a year ($900 cost over 3 years). Here are some alternatives I can now justify looking at for that price: It's fine for a church or local bar/venue, or community news events, school events, etc. The quality of the camera is good, but, it's not great. I'm now up to $1340 for the product and 'full access' to the software. They have effectively, doubled the cost of the camera if I use it for 3 years (about what I expect it to last for).ģ years of subscriptions to use the entire package: $540
Imagine my shock when I saw the price tag. I tested the new app and features and was very pleased to see what they were doing. Just as Apple and Google don't charge for the extra features of OS or application updates, I thought Mevo would do the same.

I was willing to pay $800 for a camera system what really is a $150, maybe $200 (tops) camera because I was so impressed with the software.Īnd I thought, when I bought this system, like all hardware companies, they'd continue to upgrade the software and push those upgrades out to existing customers as part of the $800 price. Mevo hit it out of the park on the concept of using software to take reasonably cheap hardware and turn it into something much more. The software, however, was revolutionary. They were using standardized Chinese hardware guts anyone could use to make a generic product in a nice looking, quality case. What really made the Mevo plus stand out though, was the software. They have a healthy markup on this product. I used to work for a silicon valley computer maker and I've had a few software and hardware startup companies as well so have some idea of what the actual hardware is costing them. Now I'm up to $750 (if I don't buy the package). It does provide very long recording/streaming capabilities and USB audio interfacing, but still, pretty expensive. Yi makes a $60 (retail) version of a camera with pretty close to the same hardware. It's effectively a Chinese built 4K GoPro knockoff in a different package.
When I bought the package for $800, I knew that it was both a great price for what it claimed to do and really expensive for the hardware you were actually getting. In particular the $20 a month to use graphic overlays and multi-destinations. I've been thinking about this for awhile now and wanted to provide some more in-depth feedback to Mevo on their business model around charging for 'features' on the Mevo camera. It sums up my thoughts on why you should not buy a Mevo product: Here's a post I wrote that I have yet to put up on the Mevo FB page.
